"Ashprihanal Aalto,44, from Helsinki Finland won the 19th Annual Self-Transcendence Race in 40 days+09:06:21, taking 23 hours,10 minutes off the record held by German legend Madhupran Wolfgang Schwerk. Mr. Aalto averaged 76.776 miles per day (123.559 km).

jg1_4722.jpg

After he crossed the line he was serenaded with songs, showered with flowers and gifts, congratulated by his fellow runners, and whisked around the course on a specially decorated float proclaiming his ascedency to the top of super-long distance running. The modest, but confident runner used two summers of mountain climbing and altitude training, combined with excellent running races and years of experience to achieve the summit of his running career. He remarked his joy and gratitude to all present, and dedicated his run to his late teacher, Sri Chinmoy, who encouraged him to always set new goals, believe in himself, and have faith in God.

Mr Aalto plans to climb more mountains next year. Indeed, he has reached the summit of running long distance running"

The former record holder Madhupran Wolfgang Schwerk sent this message to Ashprihanal

"I am tremendously happy for you - you deserve the world record! Your constancy and focus is spectacular. I have always admired you for your ease. You run like a feather. This is self-transcendence par excellence. You are the greatest! I am happy for you with all my heart."

sri-chinmoy-iron-cove-race-dec2013.jpg
As day follows night and the flower blossoms from the bud, so another year of the Sri Chinmoy Sydney Series comes to a close, with a lovely run around The Bay at Iron Cove of 14km, 7km and 4km.

Stand-out performance in the 14km race came from Raewyn Harlock, racing in the Women 50-59 category, whose 56:25 not only led home all the women and all the men 50-59, but came in 5th outright. Amy Gumley took out the Women Under 50s with 58:01 from Kaye Johnson (1:00:52) and Elizabeth Pittaway (1:04:10).

Gary Mullins ran with a small pack through the first half of the race before breaking away in the second lap to finish in 51:11 from Anthony Alston (51:20) and Pete Conway (51:57). Victor Correa once again took the honours in the Men 50-59 with an excellent 56:33; with John Hoffman taking out the Men 60-69s in 1:08:27.

16-year-old Hamish Wallace continued his dominance in recent Sri Chinmoy events with a stellar run in the one-lap 7km race of 23:37, from Daniel Watchorn (25:52) who just out-ran Vincent Touchard (25:54). Alistair Watchorn ran well in 29:40 to take out the Men 50-59 category; with Ric Giddins winning the Men 60-69 in 31:32; and Edward McMaster the Men 70 and Over in 52:39.

Isabelle Crouche was the stand-out runner in the women's race, winning in 27:04 from Sophie Handsaker (27:56) and Annabel Hickey (28:26). In the Women 50-59, first place went to Monica McNamara (33:23); while her namesake Sue McNamara (36:33) took out the Women 60-69, only 10 seconds behind.

The 4km race saw an almost-dead-heart between Boys Under 17 runners and twins, Luke and Jayden Schofield, crossing the line together in 13:55. Angus Beer ran a fine 14:24 to take out the Boys Under 13s from Ned Denton (16:53) and James Smith (17:23). William Yang's 15:40 set the mark for the Men 17 and Over.

In the Girls Under 13s, Renee Lewis ran 16:41 to take first place from Isabella Mardini (17:20) and Hannah Woolf (21:50). Milly Denton meanwhile took out the Girls Under 17s in 17:52 from Sraah Durante (19:40 ) and Louisa Grundy (22:50); while Kirsten Todd won the Female 17 and Overs in 21:02.

Full results by category are published, along with a photo album from around the course.

The Sri Chinmoy Sydney Series will return in the New Year, with more of the same favourites and a few new venues offering a rich menu of varied challenges for Sydney runners in 2014.

Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team Nbg. e.V.

sri-chinmoy-100k_0.jpg

The Sri Chinmoy Canberra Centenary 100km Trail Run was conceived as a celebration, in this year of celebrating everything good about our National Capital. 100km for 100 years; a trail race through the scenic heart of the "Bush Capital"; an epic effort to commemorate the monumental human achievement that is Canberra.

Saturday was a day of gratitude: gratitude for a visionary city – a city uniquely formed in, embraced by and infused with the beauty, power, subtlety and majesty of its landscape, natural and man-made; gratitude for inexplicably glorious weather that sprang from a week of gloom like a startling bloom on a bare Winter's branch; gratitude for the elegant simplicity of long-distance running as the vehicle par excellence of inner and outer discovery, conquest and self-transcendence; gratitude for the camaraderie and uplifting community of spirit that is born of shared suffering and striving for high ideals; gratitude for ourselves and each other.

58 Solo Runners and 80 Relay Teams flocked nervously, excitedly and expectantly to "My Rainbow-Dreams" cafe in Dickson on Friday evening for a pre-race check-in and pasta meal, under still-moody skies that had served up a week of flooding rains, unremitting cold and cantankerous winds.

Yet by 4:30 next morning we were in another world, as the Finish chute was installed at Regatta Point overlooking a still, serene lake under a full moon and every star of the Heavens. It was as though Nature had signed a truce with herself, in order not only to watch and enjoy, but even to play a starring role in the forthcoming drama.

The fresh, pure light of 6am saw the Solo Runners embark on their quest: a band of heroes in the making, launching gently down the grassy slope towards the lake, Parliament House, the distant hills, their looming day of destiny. Shortly after, the Sun himself followed their lead, rising with a vast smile, to a day of infinite promise…

Half an hour later under a now beaming Sun, the Relay Teams shot off with bustling energy, more intent on speed than endurance; eager to devour the hills ahead...

A remarkable and heartening dimension of the race was the presence of so many female runners. Of the 362 participants (including all Solo Runners and Relay Team members), 142 were women, comprising 40% of the field. While not unusual in shorter distance events, this high turn-out in an Ultra speaks of a growing trend and was felt throughout the field with perhaps a more caring and mutually encouraging atmosphere than is sometimes felt in a more male-dominated race.

Susan Keith, an experienced ultra trail runner from Glenmore Park, ran her own race amongst some of the faster men in the field, leading every leg from go to woe and finishing in a strong 11:24:57. Second among the women was Simone Hayes of Sydney, also running her own race and never threatened for her place, crossing the line in 12:15:24. Third placed Natalie Best of Sydney completed the NSW trifecta, finishing in 13:14:46; with Kellie Power, also of Sydney, fourth in 13:45:59; Kathryn Alley from Queensland came fifth in 13:55:07; Nichole Tierney was sixth overall and first Canberra girl home in 16:05:56; and Kelley Bennett took seventh in 16:24:42.

Canberra local boy Thomas Brazier, with a strong rogaining background, ran a well-paced, brave and intelligent race from the front. Paul Cuthbert, Damian Smith and Wes Gibson were close to hand through the first leg and Paul stayed in sight through the second and up onto Black Mountain, but from here on Thomas's staying power proved too strong, finishing in an exuberant 9:48:48. From here on the finishers were evenly and steadily spaced, with Paul Cuthbert second in 10:10:08; Andrew Donaldson third in 10:21:23; Paul Smith fourth in 10:29:42; Damian Smith fifth in 10:38:50; Gavin Markey sixth in 10:49:15 and Dave Graham seventh in 10:52:38.

Each finisher claimed victory in the truest sense: victory over the course, victory over the many demons, doubts, fears and obstacles – physical, mental and emotional – that beset a runner in the course of a long day on the trails. Wes Gibson has written of his trials in his blog to finish his first 100 km race. Olympic Gold Medallist (in archery) Simon Fairweather showed his adaptability and inner strength in completing his longest ever race; as did ACT Minister for Territory and Municipal Services (and hence, Minister for Trails); Corrections; Housing; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs; and Ageing – Shane Rattenbury MLA – whose victory was as much a victory of sheer will, with the limited training time afforded by a hectic political schedule seeing a relatively fast first half contrasted with a grinding battle over the northern hills as ultimately his deep love of Canberra and the innate instinct of a champion, coaxed him home in 12:06:21.

Trevor Fairhurst joined Paul Smith as former Sri Chinmoy Triple-Triathlon multiple champions of yore, returning to tackle this newest addition to the Canberra endurance calendar, finishing just ahead of first-time 100km runner from Mongolia, Bayarkhuu Batbayar, whose only communications with race officials all day comprised smiles and nods, with the biggest smile reserved for the finish line after 12:35:19. The furthest 20-year-old Adam Huttner-Koros had ever run before is a Half-Marathon, yet when he saw the race advertised, felt he must give it a go – and after 5 months of dedicated training, finished fresh and sparkling in 13:01:25.

Never having been staged before, every winning time in every category goes straight into the record books. Some will take a lot of beating: none more so than the outright fastest time of the day, set by the All-Male Team of "@runcanberra" – Matt Fenech, Rob Walter, Martin Dent and Philo Saunders – whose combined 6:59:46 over a demanding course was a world-class performance, finishing almost exactly one hour ahead of "Tuggers parkrun" team of Andy Hogg, Tim Cochrane, Gareth Candy and Jason McCrae in 7:59:44. Martin Dent's time for Run3 over Black Mountain of 1:26:02 was almost 24 minutes faster than the next quickest time on the day; indeed, the race became a competition between "@runcanberra" and event officials, who only barely managed to have all the transitions and aid stations set up in time before this whirlwind phenomenon passed through! Third home in the All-Male Teams was "Misfits" – Guy Jones, Keith Cassilles Southgate, Andrew Fisher and Peter Young in 8:18:34.

Aimee Davenport led "Team Here We Go" in the All-Female division with a fantastic first leg of 2:11:23 – 9 minutes faster than the next best time over this leg – with Margaret Helmsley, Hannah Every-Hall and Tiffany Bonasera all running strongly to secure the win in 9:17:56; from second place "Running mums" – Emily Stacey, Sarah McRae, Allison Jones and Kelly Candy – in 9:45:30; and third placed "Gazelles" in 10:29:38 – Regan Field, Richelle Turner, Caroline Scott and Beth Sargent.

"Enough of the Puffs" bravely entered the Mixed Teams division with 2 male and 2 female runners – proving that when all members are champions, that is exactly the best combination! Their winning time of 8:10:09 saw them beaten by only two of the All-Male teams. Dave Osmond ran the 2nd fastest time for Run1 and Louise Sharp backed him up well; then Elizabeth Humphries ran the fastest time for Run3 by over 12 minutes of 1:59:58; and Stuart Doyle brought the team home with a leg record for Run4 over Mt Majura and Mt Ainslie of 1:42:58. Second Mixed Team was "Formaggi che corrono" in 8:33:33 – featuring a record Run2 leg over Mt Arawang and Mt Stromlo from Hannah Flannery of 2:30:49, complementing the work of Bill Taylor, Denis Mungoven and Cameron Mackintosh. Third were the "Grey Knights" – Elle Knight, Jeff Grey, Stuart Grey and Gerard Wildie – in 9:24:52.

Organisers are all gratitude to the Gungahlin SES, who manned many road crossings and drink stations; to Sports Medicine ACT for providing medical support throughout; to the ACT Government for sponsoring their Canberra Business Event Centre as the magnificent venue for the Awards Presentations (and start and finish – hence the uphill finish!); to Hammer Nutrition for supplying the wonderful HEED replacement drink for all aid stations; to "My Rainbow-Dreams" vegetarian cafe for catering the pre-event pasta meal; to members of the Canberra sporting community for helping out on the day, including Ben Lee, Michaela Watt, Carinna Tong, Phil Essam, Steve Appleby, Tom Landon-Smith; to members of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team from Canberra, Sydney and Geelong; and to Martin Fryer for his major role in course design; and to all runners without whose participation this event could not have happened!

Full results are published – overall and by category – along with an excellent photo album from Andy MacDonald, and our own album from around the course.

RACE DETAILS

Sri Chinmoy strongly felt that the ‘self-transcendence’ aspect was particularly important in ultrarunning. There comes a point in a race when one's physical prowess has reached its limit. To continue on, the runner must rely on his or her own inner determination, and tap into the infinite spiritual power that is within us all, which Sri Chinmoy called the soul, the representative of the ultimate Divine Being.

Having said that, no particular beliefs are required to apply for the race, but applicants should feel comfortable blending into a spiritual environment where many of their fellow runners and helpers are spiritual seekers.

RACE CAMP / FACILITIES

Where most of the year lie empty grass fields, annually they are transformed into the Race Camp, a tiny village complete with kitchens, showers, running hot and cold water, a camping area, dugouts, lap counting trailer, electrical generator, and toilets, all enclosed with 4 ft. high fencing.  Please continue reading below for further details

Lap counting forms the heart of the race.  Sri Chinmoy strongly felt the live personal communication from lap counters to runners adds significantly to the energy of the race and the overall runner experience.  As such, the lap counting station is staffed by volunteer counters and an announcer 24-hours a day during the entire race.  Each runner will hear his or her name and lap total announced each time he or she passes the lap counting station.

Accuracy is of utmost importance.  We utilize two counting systems in order to minimize errors:  1) Lap times are entered by hand on paper lap sheets for each runner, and 2) a separate semi-automated backup system wherein all runners’ laps are entered into a computerized lap counting system.

Please adhere to the following:

  • Your race number must be visible and worn on your stomach or torso at all times (not your side, leg or back).  Use of a bib belt is recommended, $10-12 on Amazon >>
  • Any anticipated time off the course, (medical, rest stop, food) which may last longer than four minutes should be reported to the lap counters beforehand, as these are recorded and must be part of the official record keeping.
  • Absolutely no pacing beyond 200 meters of the counting station by anyone.
  • Cutting the course at any point results in immediate disqualification.
  • Minimum requirement of completing 27 miles / day to stay in the race.
  • Any issues should be directed to the on-duty race director or lap counting captain for resolution.

There is a large analog scoreboard adjacent to the lap counting station displaying each runner with total mileage accumulated.  For the most part, the physical scoreboard is regularly updated (less frequently at night), but please note the scoreboard is not official, the lap counters maintain the official records.

There are digital scoreboards in the camp kitchen (along course) displaying all runners’ current total laps, mileage, and kilometers.

There are two separate kitchens:

Runners Kitchen

Every day, three healthy, tasty vegetarian meals (including some vegan options) are provided self-serve buffet-style, for runners only, in the Runners Kitchen at these approximate times:  6:30 am, 12 noon, 7:00 pm.  Additionally, soup, hot drinks, various snacks, and Skratch Hydration electrolyte drink are available continuously.

Note: The rear kitchen area of the Runners Kitchen is for use by race cooks only and is off-limits to runners and helpers.

Meals for runners’ helpers are not included in the entry fee, but may be purchased on a per-day ($35) or per-meal ($12) basis. Please pre-arrange with the race director.

Camp Kitchen

This is a separate structure where runners and helpers can prepare their own food at any time, 24/7, and includes:  refrigerators, tables, stove, pots, pans, kitchen utensils, paper plates and plastic untensils, toaster, microwave, blender, sink with hot and cold running water, and a hot water urn.

Please:

  • Label any items you place in the fridge with your name.
  • Be considerate and clean up after yourself when finished – wash dishes, pots, pans etc., wipe tables, dispose of trash.
  • Meat is allowed for non-vegetarian runners, but must be self-provided and cooked in the Camp Kitchen.
  • Alcohol, Marijuana and drugs are expressly forbidden both by our race regulations and those of the New York City Parks Department.

In addition, there are many snack foods available continuously in the Camp Kitchen for all authorized helpers and race volunteers.

There are two showers in the shower trailer available to runners 24/7, with hot and cold water.  Please keep shower length reasonable.  There is a utility sink with hot and cold water on the side of the shower trailer

Affectionately referred to as the ‘Dugouts’ (it’s an American baseball thing…) these long covered areas with open fronts directly alongside the course provide each runner with their own small table space and a chair, for quick and easy access to a selection of their gear, and for short breaks.  However, as dugout space is limited, kindly observe the following guidelines:

  • Two runners per 6 ft. table. (approx. 24” x 36” space per runner)
  • All food and gear which does not fit on your half of the table must be stored in your personal tent.
  • One chair per runner.  Plastic folding chairs are provided, bring your own chair cushion. Helpers must use their runner's chair if they sit in the dugout.
  • No beds or reclining chairs are permitted.
  • Electrical outlets are provided for charging phones, electronic devices, etc.

  • A medical tent is provided for limited medical treatment. It is supported entirely by  volunteers so 24-hour coverage is not possible.
  • Between the hours of 7am and 7pm at least one MD is always present. Hours of coverage may be increased on a day-to-day basis depending on staffing availability.  Hours are posted daily.
  • Massage is possible only when one of our very experienced volunteers is available.
  • The medical tent is divided into an area for men and an area for women. In order to assure privacy we request everyone use the appropriate designated area.
  • The medical area is dedicated to medical services and is not a rest area. Please rest in your tent. Generally, no more than 15 minutes is allowed per runner per medical break, and no more than 2 medical breaks per runner per day is a good guideline.

Sleeping quarters for this race are camping tents.  Please use the designated area of the Race Camp for this purpose.  We have a limited number of tents available to runners, we are grateful to those who can bring their own tent.  When registering, please indicate whether or not you need a tent.  Also see the tent guidelines section below for tent selection, and proper set-up.

RVs, camper vehicles, trailers etc. are not allowed in the park.

Race staff are unable to repair or rebuild tents during the race, so please adhere to the following guidelines for selecting and setting up your tent:

Tent size:   Tent height should not exceed 4 ft. / 1.5 m.  The most suitable tents are the smaller 1–2-person kind; the larger 6–8-person stand-up tents simply can’t handle the winds often experienced in Flushing Meadows in April, and sway heavily, dislodging stakes and covers.  In the past, some of these monsters have been flattened, torn and in a couple of instances, even blown into the nearby lake!

Waterproof plastic fly:  For a tent to remain dry during the seemingly inevitable rain storms it must have a plastic tarp as a waterproof fly.  This fly is NOT the one that comes with the tent; it is a separate additional waterproof plastic tarp that must cover the tent and go all the way to the ground around the perimeter of the tent, to prevent rain and wind from entering. A fly that does not cover all the way to the ground will leak water and flood the tent floor.

Waterproof plastic ground tarp:  Each tent requires a plastic ground tarp under it to prevent flooding. The plastic tarp must remain completely out of sight under the tent floor. (i.e. the edges of the tarp should not be visible). Ground tarps that extend beyond the tent footprint funnel water under the tent and flood the tent floor.

We have a limited number of plastic tarps available for use as flys and ground tarps

There is no electricity in the camping area.

Folding army-style cots and a limited number of wool blankets are also available for runner use, max 2 blankets per runner.  Blankets should not be used for chair cushions or foot rests.

MISCELLANEOUS DETAILS

The Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team is renowned for offering a high standard of service to runners and fostering a highly supportive atmosphere.  Volunteers are there for the general support of all runners, as well as for the administration of the race. As such, they cannot serve as individual helpers to any runner.  Runners are encouraged to have dedicated helpers during the race, who can service their specific needs.

Should any issues arise that you are unable to resolve on your own, please approach the on-duty race director for assistance

Although the average high is only 65°F (18°C), and average low is 49°F (10°C) this time of year, we've had temperatures as low as 32°F/0°C and as high as 80°F/25°C.   Usually we experience at least one big rainstorm.  It is consistently breezy in the park, occasionally very windy.  In other words, prepare for all extremes; light and heavy coats, rain gear, windbreaker, hat, sunblock, a sleeping bag rated down to at least 32°F / 0°C, and a sleeping pad.

Race shirts are provided for all runners registered at least 3 weeks before the race.  Sizes are Unisex X-Small, Small, Medium, Large, X-Large, 2XL

Same categories for all three races:

Under 50: Top 3 male and female
50-59: Top 2 male and female
60 & over: First male and female

Medals for all finishers

Runners must be 18 or older to compete

DIRECTIONS & SHOPPING

IMPORTANT:  DO NOT use navigation apps other than Google maps (such as Waze or Apple maps), as most of them do not recognize some of the roads inside the park and can take you to the wrong part of the park on the wrong side of the expressway.  (Flushing Meadows park is HUGE, larger than Central Park).

The Race Camp is located just southwest of the Van Wyck Expressway / Long Island Expressway interchange.  The easiest option for navigation is to use this Google map link which will take you close to the Race Camp entrance (for loading /unloading only!), or enter Meadow Lake Promenade & Meadow Cir, Queens, NY.   Coordinates: 40°44'28.8"N 73°50'19.5"W

Please obey 10MPH speed limit once inside park

Alternatively, you can use these written directions from the northbound or southbound Van Wyck Expressway:

FROM NORTHBOUND VAN WYCK EXPRESSWAY:

Take exit 12A toward College Pt Blvd/I-495 E/Long Is Expwy/Eastern Long Is.

After 0.4 miles, exit left towards Meadow Lake, it’s a small nondescript exit, easy to miss!

The road will do a U-turn underneath the elevated freeway and leave you traveling on the southbound Van Wyck service road.

After 0.4 miles, take the exit on the right towards Flushing Meadows Corona Park (brown exit sign)

Continue following directions below, from third bullet point (at stop sign)

FROM SOUTHBOUND VAN WYCK EXPRESSWAY

Take exit 11 toward Flushing Meadows Corona Rd/69 Rd/Jewel Ave

After 0.2 miles take the exit on the right towards Flushing Meadows Corona Park (brown exit sign)

At the stop sign, turn right.  After 50 meters, bear right at the fork.  The road will now parallel the Grand Central service road.

After 0.3 miles (passing a large parking lot on your left), you will go over a very short bridge.

At the end of the bridge, turn right. Follow road for another 0.2 miles, the race camp will be on your left, entrance is approximately under the first elevated freeway ramp.

Free parking is available in the small lot about 100 meters north of the race camp.  Parking lot entrance >>

Please do not leave bags or valuables visible in your car.  Parking is not permitted anywhere except in the parking lot, with the exception of designated race vehicles.

Four blocks of shops with most everything one might need are located within 1 mile of the race, on 108th St., between 63rd Rd. and 65th Ave.  Map it >>

If walking, follow this route >>

Or follow these written directions:  Take the pedestrian walkway over the Grand Central Parkway, about 0.3 miles west of the race course. On the other side, the walkway will turn right and slope downward along Grand Central service road.  continue along service road until 108th St., turn left, after three blocks, there is all sorts of shopping, from 63rd Rd. to 65th Ave.
