It’s good to be back at Como Landing after an absence of two years; the bike path has been fully functional for several months and the freeway works have all gone (for now!). The staging venue may be compact where it hugs a bend in the Yarra River at Heron Island but its small size creates a friendly, intimate atmosphere. We are grateful to Wesley College for allowing us to use this patch of grass for the morning.

Quite surprisingly, this year’s race entry numbers are more than we have ever had at this venue, proving the popularity of the river course and that the half-marathon is the aspirational distance for quite a lot of runners now.

Weather-wise, it was just about as perfect a morning you could get for a longer race, the temperature about 15 degrees and the air perfectly still. The three races started together after a short delay due to a PA malfunction and it wasn’t long before the runners had stretched out some distance along the course. Looking across the river from the venue, the runners soon came into view running towards the city-end of the course.

Eventual 14km winner Grant Morgan took charge of the front of the field from the start, confusing John Bernstein momentarily as he crossed the line to win the 7km race in 24:08 when Grant kept going. Richard Squires was second in 25:16 and Tristan Watson third in 26:52.

In the women’s 7km race, Masters runner Ange Carswell was first in 28:47 and eighth overall. Sally Schwarz, also a Masters runner was second in 33:25 and Daniela Klarica was third in 34:59.

The winner of the 14km race was never in much doubt – Grant Morgan continued his strong pace on the second lap and won convincingly in 47:57. Tom Rodgers was second 50:51 and Louis Guihennevc was third in 51:27.

Winner of the women’s 14km was Catherine Schweb in 55:02. Catherine ran confidently throughout the race and placed seventh overall. Second was Hannah Blanchett in 59:11 and third was Sarah Hughes in 1:01:51.

In the main event of the day, three runners battled it out for most of the race, with Guy McLaren eventually prevailing to win the half-marathon in 1:18:51. Xavier Coppock and Fabian Hitchens were so close on the finish line, the timing system couldn’t separate them, both recording 1:19:13 but the naked eye giving Xavier the slight edge for second place.

Jutta Schmitz won the women’s half-marathon in 1:35:23, Sarah McMullan was second in 1:36:12 and Kristie Jennings was third in 1:37:00 to round out the placings.

Our next event is a veritable feast of running – marathon, 30km, 20km, 10km and 5km runs at Princes Park on Sunday 28 July. Good running and we look forward to seeing you there.

Where points are tied, positions are determined by

  1. Most races competed in.
  2. Fastest time in 4 mile race
  3. Fastest time head to head

Next season there will be a slight change to the points system. If you compete in a race, but don't get in the top 5, you will gain 0.5 points.

Rupantar has been the race director of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team since 1985, having been asked by Sri Chinmoy to serve in that capacity. As well as working on the big races the US Marathon Team organise each year - the 3100 Mile Race and the Six and 10 Day Race - he also spends a considerable amount of time archiving the Marathon Team's 40 year history on this website.

White, Nilpushpi. "Sri Chinmoy Masters Games." (Press Release) Retrieved 2013-05-24. Archive copy at Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team office, Queens, New York.

Victory Field, Forest Park, Queens, New York, proved true to its name on July 11, at the annual Sri Chinmoy Masters Games, as 171 athletes, age 40 and over, scored victories of many sorts. On this sunny Saturday, victory meant setting meet or personal records, crossing the finish line first, or simply crossing the finish line.

Ivan Black, 43 won the overall trophy for the men. In the morning he thought he had a chance to win the big trophy, but as the day wore on, he saw 'the older guys competing in every event - often with little or no competition,' and he began to lose hope. what he didn't know was that a graded scoring system took these inequities into account. If someone won and there was no competition, they got one point - if there was competition, they got three points.  Ivan competed in 10 events, earning 18 points with four firsts.

Games founder Sri Chinmoy, 60, powered his way to the finish tape in the 100m in 13.7, a PR and a new meet record. Second was Tom Talbot, 60, (14.2). the two switched places in the 200m with a breathtaking photo finish - Tom's 29.6 just a hair ahead of Chinmoy's 29.7.

The three sisters, Pearl Auerbach, 70, Rose Ruston, 76, and Sylvia Swartz, 80, were back again, this year trailing clouds of glory from the New York State Senior Games held in Portland, N.Y., June 11-14, where they won six gold medals each. The sisters have been gathering up the gold since they began competing in 1987.

The overall winner for the women, with 23 points, was Zofia Turosz, 54, who traveled from Hartford, Conn., for the meet. This is her second year in a row winning the overall trophy. Her mile race walk (9:02) topped the time in all the women's age-group categories by a full minute; so did her 6-minute mile run. Now that's some victory.

Twenty-four runners braved a steady rainfall and buffeting winds. Frank DeLeo of Brooklyn broke away from Prospect Park teammate Al Prawda to take first-place honors in the 50-km. Kaaren Schilke-Cherns took first place for the women, finishing in tandem with her husband, Canadian ultra record holder Trishul Cherns.

The 50-milers were led by Don Davis of Bethlehem, Pa. Finishing second, in his first ultra ever - a celebration of his 40th birthday - was Joe Sikora. In the women's race, Barbara McLeod of Ottawa set a Canadian age-group record for women 50 and older.

The race would not have been complete without Egor Egan's dramatic finish, hours after everyone else had come across the line.

    Sri Chinmoy 12 Hour Walk Christchurch - 08 Nov 2009 ... Results

Hagley Park North - Christchurch multi-day runner Ujjwala Mettrick 24, wins inaugural ultra walk!

The day dawned with a beautiful sunrise and a chorus of birds, which made us feel good to be alive. Slowly the brave walkers arrived, with smiles showing apprehension and excitement. 7am neared and the brave gathered on the start line. Marshalls, timers, lap counters and aid station ready?!

On your marks, get set, GO!

The day saw a small but enthusiastic turn out of competitors including many who had not taken part in an event like this before.

Leading from the second lap was Ujjwala Mettrick, 24 years old. She is an experienced ultra distance competitor who has completed The Sri Chinmoy 6 Day Race, two previous 12 hour walks and also multiple 47 mile runs. Ujjwala completed 82km in the 12 hours. The first female and overall winner, an amazing feat.

The first male was Angus Bromley completing 81km. He stayed cheerful and his pace was consistent the whole day. We can not forget his trusty helper Joan who is also a keen walker.

We had a good turn out of teams and there was a close finish between the teams ‘3 days in town’ and ‘Go like the Klappers’. There was an intense finish to the teams race with ‘3 days in town’ just managing to hold out the "Klappers". We thank everyone for there enthusiasm and support and look forward to seeing you all again next year.
